Washington Street Bridge Update
A report on the Washington Street Bridge that was prepared by Olsson Associates was presented to the City Council on January 30th. Olsson personnel recommended to the City in December that the bridge should be closed for safety reasons. It has been shut down to all traffic since December 6th. The final Olsson report estimates that it will cost about $1 million to renovate the bridge and about $2 million to $2.2 million to completely replace or relocate the bridge. The only way federal/state grant dollars can be received to rebuild the bridge is if it is relocated to a different city road. That would allow it to qualify for the grant funds. At its current location, repair or replacement work on the Washington Street bridge does not qualify for these grant dollars because it is only a “local” street. Other funding options also are under consideration. It is quite likely that funds for the bridge repair or replacement will not be approved in time for construction work to begin during the upcoming fiscal year (FY2012-2013). However, there is a very good chance that engineering work could start during the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
City of Sedalia Council and Staff Working on Annual Budget
The Sedalia City Council and City Staff are working on the Fiscal Year 2013 Annual Budget. The City Council will be holding several work sessions to hear reports on some of the more expensive items. One work session was held on the proposed fire station and fire truck. On January 30th another work session was held on the now closed Washington Street Bridge. On February 6th the Council will hear a report on the soon-to-be completed pay plan study. If implemented in whole or part, the plan will cost money in order to bring the city in-line with municipalities of similar size. On February 18th a Saturday morning strategy session will be held by Council and staff to prioritize the large projects. Sedalia’s fiscal year begins April 1st.
